Q. Are media, as well as educational and civic organizations, allowed to use the Mateo and Cientina cartoons?

Yes. The cartoons can be downloaded and reproduced in general-circulation publications and on web sites, for community- or school-based activities, and for home use. Any other use of the cartoons requires the written consent of Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley.

The Mateo and Cientina cartoons are copyrighted by the Regents of the University of California.  The copyright notice on the cartoons must appear on all reproductions or publications of the cartoons.  

Please send copies of each separate publication of a Mateo and Cientina cartoon, or the URL of web sites using the cartoons, to Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley. In addition, we would like to know:

  1. Circulation of the publication or number of page views of the web site.
  2. The geographical region targeted by your publication or web site.

Q. Is there a charge for use of the cartoons?

No. For the purposes listed above, the cartoons may be used free of charge. We encourage the use of the Mateo and Cientina cartoons by newspapers, schools and related organizations, religious organizations, and community groups. 

Q. Are there any additional restrictions?

Yes. The cartoons cannot be changed in any way. They must be published or reproduced as is. They cannot, without prior written permission, be resold or repurposed as stand-alone merchandise, including, but not limited to, note cards, marketing or publicity materials for commercial use, booklets, or graphical elements for a web site.
