The project team consists of LHS experts on content, organization, and media.
Mateo y Cientina
Young, curious Brother Mateo and Sister Cientina have been doing math and science ALL their short lives with relatives (aunt, uncle, mother, and others). They get excited solving math challenges, exploring science experiments, asking questions, and discovering answers using things like toothpicks, cornstarch, paper, and other items found around the house.
Grace Coates, Kevin Beals, Verónica Urdaneta, and José Franco.
José Franco
EQUALS Director, Lawrence Hall of Science, has directed various grant-funded projects, including the Matemática para la familia (FAMILY MATH) program, LHS English-Language Development in Mathematics Content Institute, and Family Advocacy in Mathematics Education project. Franco serves as Project Director.
Barbara Ando

Grace Dávila Coates
AJ, Linda, Mateo, and Cientina are also on our team.
FAMILY MATH Director, Lawrence Hall of Science, is coauthor of the books FAMILY MATH for Young Children and FAMILY MATH II: Achieving Success in Mathematics. She devotes her time to selecting, developing, and modifying mathematics activities, as well as to coordinating community class outreach.
Kevin Beals
Curriculum Specialist, Great Explorations in Mathematics and Science (GEMS), Lawrence Hall of Science, is lead science activity developer for the project. He has coauthored numerous guides and children’s books for GEMS.
Verónica Urdaneta
Public Information Officer and Community Liaison, Lawrence Hall of Science, introduces the project and its components to diverse businesses and organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and greater San José to generate community support for distributing the newspapers and educational cartoons, and to solicit financial contributions and incentives.
and don't forget Max
Pet dog of Mateo y Cientina has been with them since he was a pup. Max is a good example of an old dog that can learn new tricks (as well as math and science). He is a little skeptical, is very observant (good for a scientist!), and likes to try things outhis own way.
The Mateo y Cientina program is created at the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), whose mission is to inspire and foster learning of science and mathematics for all. LHS is the public science center of the University of California, Berkeley, and an innovative leader in the field of science and mathematics education. LHS engages students and their families in exciting science and mathematics at LHS as well as in their classrooms, schools, and communities; designs and disseminates effective instructional materials and exhibits; and creates distinctive learning and leadership opportunities for educators. LHS is committed to serving all, especially those with limited access to science and mathematics.
